| Patriarch
Teoctist
of the Romanian Orthodox Church passed away on July 30,
2007, at the age 92!
Very
active in ecumenical affairs, and in the religious revival
of the Romanian Orthodox Church following the 1989 events,
Patriarch Teoctist was the spiritual leader of over 18 million
Orthodox Romanians worldwide, serving for 57 years as a
bishop, and 21 as a Patriarch. He
made history in 1999 when he invited Pope John Paul II to
Romania, the first time a pope had visited an Orthodox country
since the Great Schism of 1054. The
Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church appointed
His Eminence Daniel Archbishop of Iasi
and Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina as interim leader.
(Since 1980 until 1988, His Eminence Daniel served as Lector
at the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey, Geneva and Associated

will be elected after a mourning period of 41 days.

Religion
and Nationalism in Iraq: A Comparative Perspective
Edited by David Little & Donald K. Swearer
Harvard University Press: 2007
This
volume provides a comparative consideration of attempts
to manage and resolve nationalist conflicts in Bosnia, Sri
Lanka, and Sudan, and examines how lessons from those situations
might inform similar efforts in Iraq. In their introduction,
Professors Little and Swearer review current scholarly thinking
on the connection of religious and ethnic factors to nationalist
conflicts, and they demonstrate the salience of religious
and ethnic identity to these conflicts. |
