Advanced Greek: Origen's Commentary on the Gospel John
Origen, who lived from about 185 to 253 CE, was one of
the most prodigious writers of antiquity, and his Commentary on
the Gospel of John is perhaps the most important of his exegetical
writings. The work was commissioned by Ambrose, a wealthy Alexandrian
of Valentinian inclinations who felt a need for clarification.
Origen's immense commentary, of which only parts have survived,
is a mixture of philology, history, allegorical interpretation,
and theological speculation. He incorporates (and attacks) passages
from the commentary on John written by the Valentinian Heracleon,
whose work is the first known on that gospel. The focus of this
reading course will be JoCom. 13, in which Origen offers extensive
interpretations of the Samaritan woman and the well (John 4).
